Anaemia is a major public health issue in India, causing impaired cognitive and motor development in children and reducing work capacity in adults.
It is especially harmful during pregnancy, increasing the risk of low birth weight (LBW) and perinatal complications.
The AMB Strategy addresses six key beneficiary groups — using a life cycle approach and six targeted interventions to combat anaemia at the grassroots level.
Six Key Interventions:
1. Prophylactic Iron Folic Acid Supplementation
6–59 months 1 ml syrup biweekly (20 mg Fe + 100 mcg FA)
5–10 years Pink tablet weekly (45 mg Fe + 400 mcg FA)
10–19 years Blue tablet weekly (60 mg Fe + 500 mcg FA)
Women 20–49 years Red tablet weekly (60 mg Fe + 500 mcg FA)
Pregnant & Lactating Red tablet daily from 2nd trimester, for 180 days postpartum
2. Periodic Deworming:
Biannual deworming (10 Feb & 10 Aug) for ages 1–19. Pregnant women dewormed during ANC visits (2nd trimester).
3. Behavior Change Communication (BCC):
Awareness on IFA compliance, proper child feeding, dietary diversification, and delayed cord clamping.
4. Testing & Treatment:
Digital hemoglobin testing (Haemoglobinometers, Semi-auto analyzers) and treatment as per AMB protocols.
5. IFA-Fortified Foods:
Mandatory distribution in all government-funded health and nutrition schemes.
6. Addressing Non-Nutritional Anaemia:
Screening for malaria, haemoglobinopathies, and fluorosis in endemic districts.
The Anaemia Mukt Bharat campaign aims to eliminate anaemia through coordinated efforts and effective community-level action.
